ISO 220 Gear Oil: Best Update Details

Are you rich in updated information about ISO 220 gear oil? If you don’t know, then today we will discuss this topic. We know it’s necessary to use high-quality oils with advanced antiwear and anti-scuffing ЕР (extreme pressure) properties in modern gear transmissions, specially for industrial applications.

ISO 220 Gear Oil

Product features of ISO 220 oil gear oil

 Some notable features of ISO oil gear oil are given below:

  • Modern antiwear and anti-friction additive package features antiwear and anti-scuffing that helps prevent scuffing, pitting, fretting corrosion, and sulfur corrosion and helps reduce power consumption. This works great for reducing the break-in period on the gear.
  • Another significant property of antiwear and anti-scuffing is that it has antioxygenic antifoaming and emulsifying properties. Which ensures long-term service by keeping equipment well and thereby preventing water pollution. And its most attractive aspect is that it helps reduce repair and maintenance costs;
  • Another feature is that it is suitable for all types of seals and inserts, thereby preventing corrosion in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys of gears.
  • It is low-temperature resistant; it can preserve its performance at low ambient temperatures (up to -28 °С);
  • This is a universal process that keeps the reduction gear oil pump used in the company standardized.
  • It improves the surface condition of damaged gears as it adds a micro smoothing effect.

ISO 220 Gear Oil formulation

Antiwear and anti-scratching are used for industrial closed-gear wheels. When the gear (reducer) is lubricated by circulation or spray (oil mist), especially when there is a heavy load and high temperature, vibration, high speed, and sliding friction, it is used to lubricate all types of heavy load gear systems, such as clutches with worms and screws and all types of bearings, roller friction, etc.

 The required level of these operating characteristics is DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP, and viscosity is ISO VG 220. On the other hand, Mobil ISO 220 gear oil may be used with warm gears. It also protects against corrosion, even in the stay of salt water. For this reason, it’s suitable for marine applications.

When should I consider using ISO 220 synthetic gear oil?

There are many advantages to using ISO 220 synthetic gear oil, one of the most significant being that it maintains the consistency of the gear oil at very low temperatures. Its use results in a much lower viscosity than equivalent grades of mineral oil in synthetic gear. Therefore synthetic gear oil is suitable for cold or low-temperature use. This helps eliminate temporary lubrication problems during splash-lubricated gear drives.

 Also, when at high operating temperatures caused by high or hot temperatures, synthetic gears have a viscosity as high or higher than ISO 220 gear oil equivalent grade of mineral oil to help resist oxidative and wear the operating temperature is more than 180 degrees Fahrenheit, it is called synthetics or premium mineral based oil (such as Group III gear oil). If the operating temperature is below 160 degrees Fahrenheit, the rules for using it are different for extended oil extraction or other operational reasons; synthetic oil is advised.

Currently, synthetic gear oils are made from polyalphaolefin (PAO) base stock, so caution should be exercised when using synthetic gear oils. Polyglycol gear oil, on the other hand, acts as a natural detergent and “clean-burning” and helps keep gearbox deposits clean due to its lubricity.

Currently, some unscrupulous gear manufacturers are building their boxes with polyglycol-based oils. Polyglycol is not compatible with the hydrocarbon base stock (mineral or PAO synthetic), causing accidents. So it is necessary to be careful in this matter. When switching from hydrocarbon oil to polyglycol, careful flushing must be done to prevent hydrocarbon residues from reacting with the polyglycol gear oil.

ISO VG 220 gear oil specification

 Euro  Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 synthetic oil is used for lubricating heavily loaded gearing, such as hypoid and worm gears, and is based on polyalkylene glycol. Some of the properties of euro Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 are anti-oxidation, antiwear, anti-rust, and high pressure. Moreover, it has a foaming ability and a high viscosity index.

The use of Euro Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 makes the equipment durable and long-lasting. Thereby reducing its maintenance cost. Before changing to Euro Syntan EP ISO-VG 220, the system should be flushed thoroughly. Because Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 is formulated only with polyalkylene glycol it can be mixed with similar synthetic products.

 Euro Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 Aluminum (alloy) The aluminum housing is exposed to Euro Syntan EP ISO-VG 220 even though the gears and axles are not exposed. Again can attack it with paint and coating products. Similarly, internal system coating can attack it with a 2-component coating seal. But in this case, NBR rubber is recommended for 100°C, and FBR rubber is recommended above this temperature.
